Architect: Uriah Cotting. It is located at today’s 20 Custom House Street. Nathaniel Hawthorne is employed here as a “weigher and gauger” from 1839 until he quits in 1841 and uses his $1,000 savings to join Brook Farm. The building is replaced by a new building in 1847.*
